Where does Department information come from?

Last Updated: Jun 17, 2015 05:25PM PDT
Microsoft Forefront TMG logs usernames in the form of Domain\Username. Fastvue TMG Reporter automatically resolves these usernames to the user's first name and last name as specified in Active Directory.

Fastvue TMG Reporter also uses the Department attribute in Active Directory to further group these users into Departments.

To edit the Department attribute for your users:
  1. Log into your domain controller and open Active Directory User's and Computers.
  2. Edit an existing user and go to the Organization tab.
  3. The Department attribute is listed here.

If the Bandwidth Dashboard is only showing 'Unknown' in the Departments section, it is possible that you do not have authentication configured in Microsoft Forefront TMG. In this case, you will only see 'anonymous' in the 'Users' sections of your reports. If this is the case, please see our article on reducing unauthenticated traffic in Forefront TMG.

If you do have authenticated usernames shown in the Users section, but Departments are still blank check the Department field is populated for these users in Active Directory.

Alternatively, the connection between Fastvue Reporter and Active Directory may not be working. You can configure and test these settings in Settings | Directory / LDAP.

Fastvue Reporter also imports the Company and Office attributes, along with Security Group memberships from Active Directory. Although these are not shown in the Dashboards or Reports, you can use these objects for filtering reports, enabling you to run and schedule reports for specific Offices, Security Groups or Companies.
