Install latest version

Nick Tolsma Oct 09, 2012 12:42PM PDT

If I have an existing install of Fastvue TMG Reporter can I upgrade it by simply installing the latest version over top?

Same question for exsiting Fastvue TMG Reporter arbiter can I upgrade it by simply installing the latest version over top?

If the answer is yes, are there any things to watch our for i.e. are custom IIS security settings retained to secure the Fastvue TMG Reporter Console web site.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your question.

For both the Arbiter and TMG Reporter, there is no problem upgrading by installing over the top. This is the recommended upgrade method.

After installing TMG Reporter this way, browse to the site and hard refresh your browser (ctrl + F5). Sometimes there can be caching issues such as old javascript files being loaded from the previous build. Restarting IIS can also help avoid these caching issues.

If you have custom settings in IIS (such as Windows authentication and authorization rules) then installing over the top should not affect these settings. On the other hand, if you uninstall TMG Reporter first via Programs and Features first, then this will remove the site from IIS and you will need to reconfigure the authentication and authorization rules when you reinstall the application.

We do recommend backing up your data location before any upgrade. Your data location can be found in Settings | Data Storage. The default is C:\ProgramData\Fastvue\TMG Reporter. Backup this location by copying the folder to a safe place. That way, if anything goes wrong after the upgrade, you can restore your data and settings using this backup. To restore the files, just make sure the TMG Reporter service is stopped then delete the data location and copy in the backup. Then install the previous release (the one you are rolling back to).

I hope this helps.

Hey Nick,

We haven't made any drastic changes in the protocol between the Arbiter and TMG Reporter so it doesn't matter which order you perform the upgrade. It is fine to upgrade to the latest arbiter while running an older TMG Reporter and vice versa.

You also don't need to stop any services manually when installing the latest version over the top as this is done as part of the installation.

Thx Scott.

In what order do you recommend doing the updates TMG Reporter 1st and then the arbiter? Also for the TMG reporter would you recommend stopping the TMG Reporter service first and then doing the update?
