Reporting slow

Brian Jul 17, 2014 03:12PM PDT

Is there a way to speed up the reports? When I run reports on my Win 2008 R2 server (4-cpu's, 4gb ram), it takes up to 1-2 hours to run reports for activity usage for a 1-2 day period.
What is the limiting resource for running reports? Is it cpu, ram, disk, etc? Are there any tricks or configs to getting the reports to run faster?
I watched a few Youtube videos showing people run reports and the reports generated in seconds.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for getting in touch about this and sorry to hear about the slow reports.

When it comes to generating reports, both CPU and RAM come into play. We have an article here on how TMG Reporter utilizes your systems resources which will help explain things:

Activity Reports are certainly the most resource intensive report from a RAM perspective, as they are keeping record of full URLs and timestamps. So you may find that the system is hitting the RAM limit on your machine and then paging to disk to generate the rest of the report. Try monitoring your server's performance while generating the report to get an idea of where the bottleneck is.

Log data size is the biggest factor in the speed of reports. 4 CPUs and 4GBs of RAM are our minimum requirements, but for larger networks I'd recommend increasing these specifications. Here's a guideline:

Less than 500 Users 4 CPUs/Cores, 6 GB RAM
500 – 1000 Users 4 CPUs/Cores, 8 GB RAM
1000 – 3000 Users 8 CPUs/Cores, 12 GB RAM
3000 – 5000 Users 8 CPUs/Cores, 16 GB RAM
5000+ Users 16 CPUs/Cores, 24 GB RAM

You can also increase the speed of reports using Filters. For example, if your Activity Report is filtered by a single user, you could add another filter to exclude blocked traffic and web ads.
Action 'Equal To' Allow
Category 'Not equal to' Advertising

This reduces the number of records in your storage that need processing and will increase the report speed.

You might also like to try:
1. User 'Not equal to' Anonymous
2. Productivity 'Equal to' Unproductive, Unacceptable

Ultimately, reports can take a little while on large datasets, especially the more detailed Activity Reports. If the report is taking longer than you'd like, be sure to make use of the 'email report' feature. When the report is generating, just enter your email address and you'll be notified when the report is ready. Also try to think ahead and schedule certain reports that you think you need to generate on a more regular basis.

All that said, we are constantly working towards increasing report speed and are concocting grand plans to provide 'near instant reporting'. Stay tuned...

I hope this helps. Please let me know how you go.
